RECOMMENDED REPTILES, AMPHIBIANS AND ARACHNIDS FOR THE BEGINNER

LEOPARD GECKOS AND AFRICAN FAT TAIL GECKOS
Leopard Geckos (Eublepharis macularis) and Fat Tail Geckos (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus) are among the easiest of lizards to maintain in captivity. They reach an adult size of 8 - 10 inches in length. These lizards rarely if ever bite and tame easily. Geckos that are handled regularly remain relatively calm. A ten gallon aquarium will adequately house a gecko. Because these geckos are nocturnal, expensive UVB lighting is not necessary. These lizards can easily be handled and cared for by supervised children. Average retail price for a leopard gecko is $50.00 and the average retail price for a fat tail gecko is $60.00. A complete terrarium set up for a leopard geckos is approximately $171.99 (gecko included, plus tax). A complete terrarium set up for a fat geckos is approximately $182.99 (gecko included, plus tax).

CRESTED GECKOS
The Crested Gecko (Rhacodactylus ciliatus), also known as the Eyelash Gecko was thought to be extinct until the early 1990's. Since then they are on their way to becoming one of the most popular pet lizards available. I often refer to these geckos as "little monkeys" due to to their ability to hang from the tail (adhesive lamellae pad on the tip of the tail). They also have the ability to "hop" from one hand to the other. Crested geckos only grow 7 - 8 inches in length and can also be easily maintained in a ten gallon aquarium. Crested Geckos have very undemanding light and heat requirements and do well in a planted terrarium. These geckos can also be raised mostly on baby food. Average retail price for a crested gecko is $125.00, fire morphs sell for $145.00. A complete terrarium set up costs approximately $236.45 (gecko included, plus tax).

BEARDED DRAGONS
The Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) has with no doubt become the most popular pet lizard in recent times. This lizard has a very calm and friendly disposition and a moderate size of approximately 19 - 23 inches. These lizards even have a high level of personality (compared to other reptiles). Bearded Dragons are very hardy, but they do have higher maintaince requirements then most lizards, they require UVB florescent light, heat lights and will need a 50 - 65 gallon terrarium some day. They eat a very wide assortment of foods, from bugs, leafy greens, manufactured foods and will even accept baby mice. These lizards can easily be handled and cared for by supervised children. The average retail price for a Bearded Dragon is $79.99 depending on size. A complete terrarium set up costs approximately $311.48 (lizard included, plus tax).

VEILD CHAMELEONS AND PANTHER CHAMELEONS
Chameleons in my opinion do not really make the "best pet" lizards. But they are very popular and if taken care of properly (especially when they are young) are very hardy. Handling is what prevents these lizards from become good pets. These lizards do not like to be handled. If handling is not an issue, then maybe the chameleon is the lizard for you. Veild Chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) are the most popular chameleon kept and most people who do keep them, end up breeding them quite easily. Panther Chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) are also reasonably popular as well. They are pretty, but also more expensive. Both lizards do require UVB lighting and tender loving care when they are babies. Veild Chameleon cost approximately $70.00 and Panther Chameleons usually cost approximately $150.00 when available. A starter terrarium for a Veil Chameleon would cost approximately $251.49. (chameleon included, plus tax ). A starter terrarium for a Panther Chameleon would cost approximately $323.45. (chameleon included, plus tax).

CHINESE WATER DRAGONS
Chinese Water Dragons (Physignathus cocincinus) are a great alternative for the person who initially comes looking for a Green Iguana. Water Dragon are generally very friendly and grow to a reasonably size of about 2.5 ft long (mostly tail) compared to the Green Iguana that gets almost 6 ft long. Chinese Water Dragons require a fairly large enclosure and eat bugs. These lizards also require UVB lighting and like to bathe in a large water dish. Chinese Water Dragons cost approximately $40.00 and a starter terrarium would cost approximately $267.48 (dragon included, plus tax).

SAVANNAH MONITORS
Savannah Monitors (Varanus exanthematicus) are large African lizard, growing just under 4 ft long. Have strong claws and sharp teeth, fortunatly they do tame easily, but not recomended for children. Often compared to pet dog, Savannah Monitors will require a large terrarium. Also, it should be noted Savannah Monitors eat mostly insects, not rodents as most keepers believe. These lizards also require UVB lighting and like to bathe in a large water dish. Savannah Monitors cost approximately $60.00 and a starter terrarium would cost approximately $313.48 (monitor included, plus tax).

CORN SNAKES AND KINGSNAKES
Corn Snakes (Elaphe guttata guttata) and Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis getula) are probably the most popular pet snakes. Their beauty, moderate size (4 - 6.5 ft), ease of maintenance, and relative docility have made them one of the most recommended snake species for the beginning hobbyist. Corn Snakes and King Snakes come in a wide variety of subspecies and colour morphs. These snakes do eat mice and small rats, but readily accept frozen or freashly killed rodents. Cheaper varieties cost approximately $59.00 to $200.00. A complete terrarium would cost approximately $100.00 (snake not included, plus tax).

GOPHER, PINE AND BULL SNAKES
Gopher, Pine and Bull snakes (Pituophis) are not as comman as corn or kingsnake, but also make excellent beginner snakes. I personally prefer these snake over the king or corn snakes. Maintaince is very simular, but they do get a bit larger, average size being 5 - 7ft long. Theses snakes cost approximately $125.00 - $250.00 (depending on the species) and terrariums cost approximately $100.00 (snake not included, plus tax).

BALL PYTHONS
The Ball Python (Python regius) would be the best pet python available provided one aquires a captive bred specimen. These snake grow to a reasonable size of 3 ft. and a very docile temperment. Ball pythons are very attractive and fairly slow moving. Ball Pythons have recently become very popular with breeders. Many new, attractive and very expensive morphs are currently being bred. Ball Pythons come from Africa. As with most snakes, maintaince is very undemanding. Captive bred Ball Pythons should not be confused with wild caught. Wild caught Ball Pythons can have numerous health and feeding problems. Captive bred Ball Pythons cost approximately $150.00 when available. Terrariums cost approximately $265.98. (python included, plus tax).

BOA CONSTRICTORS
Boa Constrictors (Boa constrictor imperator) would be good choice for the person looking for a larger snake. Better to go with a Boa Constrictor then a Burmese Python. Comman Boa's come from Northern Mexico to Columbia and grow from 4 - 8 ft long. Boa's will require a larger terrarium one day and are fairly undemanding. Not recommended for children. Comman Boa Constrictors cost approximately $249.00. Terrariums cost approximately $333.94. (boa included, plus tax).

WHITES TREE FROGS
Few amphibians make good pets, but Whites Tree Frogs (Litoria caerulea) a quite hardy, great for beginners. These tree frogs get to be a nice size at 4 - 5 inches, but they are not usually very active. Whites Tree Frogs will change colours from green to brown depending on humidity, temperature and light. Terrariums can be designed with a rainforest concept in mind. The taller the terrarium the better. Whites Tree Frogs cost approximately $ 36.00 and terrariums cost approximately $155.99 (frog included (not plants), plus tax)[click here for details]

ROSE HAIR TARANTULA
The Rose Hair Tarantula (Grammostola rosea) affectionatly known as "Rosy" is the most commonly sold tarantula and one of the most calmest pet tarantulas available. Rose Hair's come from Chile and range from 5 - 6 inches in length, females can live from 15 - 20 years. In addiition, they are very hardy, and can withstand a wide variety of environmental conditions, making captive husbandry rather simple. Rose Hair Tarantulas cost $30.00 and are always available. A starter terrarium would cost $73.69. (tarantula included, plus tax).

EMPEROR SCORPION
The Black Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is the most commonly kept scorpion in captivity. These scorpions are also amongst the calmest to handle. Emperor's grow from 5 - 8 inches in length and have an 8 year life span. These scorpions come from Togo and Ghana Africa. They are usually very hardy and are one of the few scorpions that can be kept communally. Put them under a black light and these scorpions glow in the dark. Emperor Scorpions cost $30.00 and are always available. A starter terrarium would cost $72.73. (scorpion included, plus tax).
